George Hunter & Mary Handley

George Hunter was the son of John Hunter & Alice Sharpe.

He was born in Whorlton, North Yorkshire & was baptised on 25 May 1760 at the Parish Church of Whorlton. George son of John Hunter householder was baptised the 25th day of May.

George married Mary Handley on 5 Nov 1786 at the Parish Church Kirkby Ravensworth, Yorkshire.

They had four children:
1. John Hunter
2. Mary Hunter
3. William Hunter
4. James Hunter

Mary Hunter died at Kirkby Hill on 9 May 1842 aged 80 Mary Hunter- Female - 80 years - Widow of George Hunter Gardener - ??? - John Hunter in attendance Gayles

George & Mary were the grandparents of Jane Hunter to whom this blog is dedicated.

William Horrocks Senior

The only thing we have been able to find out about William Horrocks is that his son William Horrocks married Jane Hunter in 1839. On their marriage certificate William Horrocks senior is recorded as a farmer.

George Hunter Horrocks died on the 29th october 1916 as stated on his death certificate.For some reason his date of death on his grave stone reads the 5th november 1916, perhaps this date was actually the date of his burial. In Loving Memory of Hannah Maria the beloved daughter of George and Sarah Horrocks who died March 5th 1888 aged 18 years & 3 months Thy Will Be Done also George Hunter husband of Sarah Horrocks who died November 5th 1916 aged 75 years.

Hannah died on the 5th March 1888 in Ancoats hospital aged just 18 years old. She died at number 8 Heaps Buildings Ashton New Road Clayton which was the family home around this period. The cause of Hannah's death was certified as Hodgkinsons disease. Her father George was present at death and was described as a Coalminer. She was buried at St Cross Church on 10 March 1888. Lily had an illegitimate daughter, Elizabeth Keeling Horrocks in 1905. She was baptised at St Cross Church, Clayton on 2 May 1906 - Elizabeth Keeling daughter of Lily Horrocks - 336 Clayton Lane, Clayton.At the time of Elizabeth's baptism Lily was living with her sister Clara Moores (formerley Horrocks).

Eizabeth Keeling Horrocks died a few months later. Her death was registered in the Sep qtr. 1905. She was buried at St Cross Church, Clayton on 18 Sep 1906 aged 5 months. Lily married Tom Shirt, a widow, in 1909.

Ellen Horrocks

Ellen Horrocks was the eleventh child & seventh daughter of George Hunter Horrocks & Sarah Mason Smith

She was born in the Jun qtr. 1887 & baptised at St Cross Church, Clayton on 18 May 1887. Sadly, Ellen's death was registered in the Sept qtr. the same year.

Sarah Horrocks & Levi Rarick

Sarah Horrocks was the third child & first daughter of William Horrocks and Jane Hunter.

She was born the 13 Jun 1843 in Gayles, YorkshireShe was baptised as Sarah Horrick on Dec 3 1843 at Kirby Ravensworth to William, quarryman, and Jane.

She emigrated to the United States during the 1860's and married Levi Rarick probably in 1868. Levi served in the Union Army during the Civil War (Co.I, 16 Pennsylvania Volunteer Corp) and was unmarried when he was discharged in April, 1865.

In the 1880 Census, Levi and Sarah Rarick are innkeepers and owners of the Port Clinton Hotel in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

At that time Port Clinton was a thriving canal boat port instrumental to the transportation of coal to the City of Philadelphia. The canal was later replaced by the Reading Railroad and Port Clinton remained an important transport center into the early 1900's.

They had seven children:

2. William Rarick was born in 1872 in Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and died in 1874 at the age of 2 years and 2 months. He was the second child and first son born to Levi Rarick and his wife Sarah Horrocks Rarick. He is buried at the Port Clinton Cemetery beside this mother and father.

Sarah Horrocks Rarick died from cancer in middle age on February 10, 1896 in Port Clinton, Pennsylvania leaving several young children. She was only 52 years of age. She is buried in the cemetery in Port Clinton next to her husband, Levi.

Ida Rarick was the first child & daughter of Sarah Horrocks & Levi Rarick.

She was born April 28, 1871 in Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and died January 31, 1954 in Hazelton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Burial is at Sect. 20, Row 6, of the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The cause of death was a heart attack. She married Mark McAllister Shaw on May 26, 1892 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Meta J Rarick

Meta J Rarick was the fifth child & second daughter of Sarah Horrocks & Levi Rarick.

She was born on July 1, 1880 in Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and died November 17, 1960 in Shamokin, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. She married Irvin T. Kauffman in 1901 in Pennsylvania.

George Rarick

George Rarick was the sixth child & fourth son of Sarah Horrocks & Levi Rarick. He was born on 13 Apr 1884

He married Margaret Cecelia Grieff on October 1, 1923 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. They resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they had two children. A son, George W. Rarick, Jr., was born on July 27, 1925 and died at age 10 hours of " valvular insufficiency" and a daughter, Lois, was born on December 13, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died June 05, 2000 in Bradenton, Florida, USA.

George Rarick died June 25, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Port Clinton, Pennsylvania.

Edward N Rarick

Edward Neri Rarick was born June 4, 1887 in Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and died May 31, 1962 in Bethesda, Montgomery County, Maryland. He married Annie Elizabeth Espenshade in 1907 in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

James Horrocks

James Horrocks was the fourth child & third son of William Horrocks & Jane Hunter

He was born on the 18 July 1846 in Whashton in Yorkshire. James Horrocks was baptised at Kirkby Ravensworth on 16 Aug 1846 to William, quarryman, and Jane.

Maria Horrocks & William Rowbotham

On the 1st October 1874, Maria married William Rowbotham in the Parish Church of Droylsden in Manchester. William was the son of Henry and Harriet Rowbotham. He was born on 5th August 1851 at 82 Carruthers Street, Ancoats and at the time of their marriage, he was working as a wire drawer in Droylsden. Their wedding was witnessed by Maria's eldest brother John and his wife Sarah.

William Henry Rowbotham was born at the family home of 2 Holt street Bradford Manchester. Annie Rowbotham was also born at the family home of 2 Holt street Bradford. Some time between 1878 and 1880 Maria and William Rowbotham had moved house just opposite to 7 Holt Street Bradford, it was at this address that their next child was born. Ada Rowbotham, but within five months of Ada's birth, the family was to move home again.

Ten years later the Rowbotham family was living on Cross street, Bradford, Manchester. Their fourth and final child Minnie, was born here just after christmas.

Sadly on the 8th September 1891 at 31 Cross Street, Bradford, Minnie Rowbotham died aged just 8 months old.

The 15th August 1899 saw another sad day for the Rowbotham family as the head of the family William Rowbotham passed away aged 48 years. William died at 20 James Street, Bradford, and the cause of William's death was bronchitis astheria Certified by W Whitman. William's only son William Henry registered his death on the 16th August and he was also present at his death. His occupation for over thirty years was a wire drawer. William joined his daughter Minnie in the family grave plot in Philips Park Cemetery on the 19th August.

Maria died on the 17th April 1937 at 103 Eccleshall Street Clayton. 103 Eccleshall Street was a small terrace house with Maria, Ada, Ernest and four of their children all living together around this time. Maria died aged 88yrs from senile myocarditis and her death was registered the same day by her only surviving child, Ada McCabe. Maria was reunited with her partner William and their three other children in Philips Park Cemetery on the 21st April 1937.
