Gayles, Yorkshire - Where Our Story Began

Gayles is a small village in the Parish of Kirkby Ravensworth

(also spelled Kirby Ravensworth), wapentake of Gilling West and liberty of Richmondshire.

It is located approximately 5 miles NW of the North Yorkshire city of Richmond and is nestled in a peaceful valley between the lovely Rivers Swale and Tees. In 1820, the approximate date of

Jane Hunter's birth, the population of Gayles was 218.

There are only a few streets in Gayles and virtually all houses are built from local stone. The town today would be immediately recognizable to the Hunter and Horrocks families as it has changed little over the last two centuries.

Looking down a street in Gayles toward Ravensworth. The streets rise up the hillside to the west until they reach Gayles Moor. The old stone quarry is located on this slope.

Formerly the village pub, the Bay Horse is now in private hands.


The remains of Ravensworth Castle in located in the gentle valley between the villages of Gayles and Ravensworth. This would have been a daily sight for our ancestors.

The parish Church of St Peter and St Paul located in nearby Kirkby Hill. This is the site of the marriage of Jane Hunter and William Horrocks as well as the church were their children were christened. Most likely it is also the final resting place for some members Hunter and Handley family.

The Family of Sarah Horrocks Rarick

Sarah Horrocks Rarick was the third child and first daughter of William Horrocks and Jane Hunter Horrocks. She emigrated to the United States sometime during the 1860s and raised her family in Pennsylvania.

This photo appears to have been taken circa 1910, nearly 15 years after Sarah Horrocks Rarick's death. In the front row are her husband Levi Rarick and his second wife, Elmira Houser. The back row shows 5 of Sarah and Levi's surviving children. Left to right: Harry Rarick, George Rarick, Ida Rarick Shaw, Charles Rarick and Edward Rarick. Not pictured is daughter Meta Rarick.

James and Frank Horrocks

Suzanne Monique de Planta de Wildenberg, nee Horrocks, of York, UK has contacted us with news of more Horrocks relatives. Suzanne was born the only child of James Horrocks and Monica Banks Horrocks in Formby, Merseyside on May 29, 1969. She married Frank de Planta de Wildenberg in 1994 and they have 3 children.

George Hunter Horrocks and Sarah Mason.


James and Frank Horrocks James Horrocks (the younger) married Emily Smith. They had six children, two of whom were twins born 6 March, 1922. They were baptized at St. Cross Church, Clayton, Manchester on 2 April, 1922.

James (second from right) served in the Royal Navy during World War II.

After the war James went on to become a mechanical engineer and company director.

He had a son called Peter (born 9 September, 1947) from his first marriage. Peter died in 2008.

James died at the young age of 56 in September, 1978.

A New Horrocks Cousin!

We've found a new cousin, Liesa Wood of Somerset England. Liesa is descended from John Horrocks, the eldest son of William and Jane Horrocks. John's daughter Mary married into the Crowthers line. Pennsylvania Grave Markers

This is the cemetery marker for Sarah Horrocks, daughter of William Horrocks and Jane Hunter. Sarah left England to try a new life in America. She married about 1868 and lived her life as an innkeeper's wife in Port Clinton, Pennsylvania amid the Blue Mountain Range. The world famous Appalachian Trail runs through Port Clinton, right passed the mountaintop cemetery, bringing hikers from all over the world to give a passing thought of remembrance to those buried here.

After some serious brush clearing the marker below was unearthed. The marker had been hidden for decades beneath some ornamental plantings. Although rather worn it reads "WILLIAM RARICK, son of Levi and Sarah Rarick. Born July 23, 1872 Died October 1, 1872 Age 2 yrs, 2 months 8 days. As William is not a name found in the Rarick line it is possible that Sarah's first son was named for her father William Horrocks.

George Hunter was the son of John Hunter & Alice Sharpe.

He was born in Whorlton, North Yorkshire & was baptised on 25 May 1760 at the Parish Church of Whorlton. George son of John Hunter householder was baptised the 25th day of May.

George married Mary Handley on 5 Nov 1786 at the Parish Church Kirkby Ravensworth, Yorkshire.

They had four children:

2. Mary Hunter
3. William Hunter
4. James Hunter

The only thing we have been able to find out about William Horrocks is that his son William Horrocks married Jane Hunter in 1839. On their marriage certificate William Horrocks senior is recorded as a farmer.

George Hunter Horrocks died on the 29th october 1916 as stated on his death certificate.For some reason his date of death on his grave stone reads the 5th november 1916, perhaps this date was actually the date of his burial. In Loving Memory of Hannah Maria the beloved daughter of George and Sarah Horrocks who died March 5th 1888 aged 18 years & 3 months Thy Will Be Done also George Hunter husband of Sarah Horrocks who died November 5th 1916 aged 75 years.

The cause of Hannah's death was certified as Hodgkinsons disease. Her father George was present at death and was described as a Coalminer. She was buried at St Cross Church on 10 March 1888. She was baptised at St Cross Church, Clayton on 2 May 1906 - Elizabeth Keeling daughter of Lily Horrocks - 336 Clayton Lane, Clayton.At the time of Elizabeth's baptism Lily was living with her sister Clara Moores (formerley Horrocks).

Eizabeth Keeling Horrocks died a few months later. Her death was registered in the Sep qtr. 1905. She was buried at St Cross Church, Clayton on 18 Sep 1906 aged 5 months. Lily married Tom Shirt, a widow, in 1909.

Sarah Horrocks was the third child & first daughter of William Horrocks and Jane Hunter.

She was born the 13 Jun 1843 in Gayles, YorkshireShe was baptised as Sarah Horrick on Dec 3 1843 at Kirby Ravensworth to William, quarryman, and Jane.

She emigrated to the United States during the 1860's and married Levi Rarick probably in 1868. Levi served in the Union Army during the Civil War (Co.I, 16 Pennsylvania Volunteer Corp) and was unmarried when he was discharged in April, 1865.

In the 1880 Census, Levi and Sarah Rarick are innkeepers and owners of the Port Clinton Hotel in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.

At that time Port Clinton was a thriving canal boat port instrumental to the transportation of coal to the City of Philadelphia. The canal was later replaced by the Reading Railroad and Port Clinton remained an important transport center into the early 1900's.

They had seven children:

Sarah Horrocks Rarick died from cancer in middle age on February 10, 1896 in Port Clinton, Pennsylvania leaving several young children. She was only 52 years of age. She is buried in the cemetery in Port Clinton next to her husband, Levi.

Rarick, Jr., was born on July 27, 1925 and died at age 10 hours of " valvular insufficiency" and a daughter, Lois, was born on December 13, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died June 05, 2000 in Bradenton, Florida, USA.

George Rarick died June 25, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Port Clinton, Pennsylvania.

Their wedding was witnessed by Maria's eldest brother John and his wife Sarah.

The 15th August 1899 saw another sad day for the Rowbotham family as the head of the family William Rowbotham passed away aged 48 years. William died at 20 James Street, Bradford, and the cause of William's death was bronchitis astheria Certified by W Whitman. William's only son William Henry registered his death on the 16th August and he was also present at his death. His occupation for over thirty years was a wire drawer. William joined his daughter Minnie in the family grave plot in Philips Park Cemetery on the 19th August.

Maria died on the 17th April 1937 at 103 Eccleshall Street Clayton. 103 Eccleshall Street was a small terrace house with Maria, Ada, Ernest and four of their children all living together around this time. Maria died aged 88yrs from senile myocarditis and her death was registered the same day by her only surviving child, Ada McCabe. Maria was reunited with her partner William and their three other children in Philips Park Cemetery on the 21st April 1937.
